Genetics of Diabetes
Short Description: Diabetes, and particularly type 2 diabetes, is one of the most significant public health problems facing Western civilization. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death (and is likely underreported), and people with diabetes have twice the risk of death as someone of the same age without diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different causes. Yet two factors are important in both. You inherit a predisposition to the disease, then something in your environment triggers it.
Aims & Scope: In this special issue the editor asks the responsible authors to review the latest understanding of the genes and the various genetic factors involved for Diabetes. This special issue would like to provide a platform wherein your contributions to the specified theme are accepted and discussions are made with regard to the scientific progress made in the respective theme. Short Description: Diabetic nephropathy (DN)/ Kimmelstiel–Wilson syndrome/Nodular diabetic glomerulosclerosis/Intercapillary glomerulonephritis is typically defined by macroalbuminuria—that is, a urinary albumin excretion of more than 300 mg in a 24-hour collection—or macroalbuminuria and abnormal renal function as represented by an abnormality in serum creatinine, calculated creatinine clearance, or glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Clinically, diabetic nephropathy is characterized by a progressive increase in proteinuria and decline in GFR, hypertension, and a high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
Aims & Scope: In this special issue the editor asks the responsible authors to review the latest understanding of the issues that remain unresolved and provides recommendations regarding the detection, prevention, and treatment of early diabetic nephropathy. Globally, as of 2010, an estimated 285 million people had diabetes, with type 2 making up about 90% of the cases. In 2013, according to International Diabetes Federation, an estimated 381 million people had diabetes. Its prevalence is increasing rapidly, and by 2030, this number is estimated to almost double.
Aims & Scope: In this special issue the editor asks the responsible authors to review the latest understanding of the statistical and epidemiological variations in diabetes, its prevalence rates at a population level.
